The Football League, EPL, UEFA, etc. simply have the wrong mindset when it comes to marketing their products. Of course they have extremely prized assests which they need to protect for fear of their product becoming devalued, thereby losing income. However, they should learn a few lessons from North America where the sports governing bodies and marketing arms, e.g. NBA, MLB, NFL, take a more relaxed and visionary view. They are less protectionist and more willing to proliferate awareness and encourage positive consumer experiences of their products through sites like YouTube and their own web spaces. Just check out NBA.com or the number of NBA clips on YouTube. The experience and engagement is far richer then say the Uefa site or EPL site. As a result growth of NBA for example is much greater than EPL in Asia. I fear for the long term future of EPL, both in England and internationally.
Just my own personal sports marketing philosophy to start the morning with.
