Spurs stand firm over logos as Government get shirty

Tottenham are refusing to bow to Government pressure over gambling advertising on children's replica shirts.

As part of a new state-approved betting industry code, gambling companies which sponsor football clubs will be asked to remove logos from all kits sold to youngsters.

The code comes into force on 1 September and, although it is voluntary and will not apply to shirts manufactured before that date, Government officials expect to see the ban being adopted before the end of the season.

If not, claim Whitehall sources, all gambling advertising in football could be outlawed. But Spurs, who have an £8.5 million-a-year deal with online casino operator Mansion, say they have no plans to remove the logos either this season or next.

Executive director Paul Barber said: "Most children want to buy a replica shirt that is authentic, we have not had a single complaint from a parent on the issue."

Spurs will argue the new code does not apply to Mansion because its deal was signed before 1 September.

The club has, however, removed Mansion logos from children's merchandise, such as pyjamas and lunch boxes, and also contributed towards research into problem gambling.

Blackburn, Aston Villa and Sunderland also have betting sponsors.

Nanny state ? Not on this issue.

We should increase awareness of the terrible harm gambling can cause. It's no better than tobacco advertising in my book.
